Kuching, Sarawak, May 27, 2024 — Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim (@anwaribrahim), arrived in Kuching, Sarawak today to attend and inaugurate the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) celebration alongside over 1,000 local and international media practitioners.
Before delivering his address, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held discussions with approximately 20 representatives from international media agencies regarding Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN, the country’s stance on current geopolitical issues, and the government’s approach to extremist political propaganda.
Following the discussions, Prime Minister Anwar proceeded to the main stage together with the Sarawak Premier, Minister of Communication, as well as state and federal government officials.
In his speech, Prime Minister Anwar reiterated the MADANI Government’s stance to ensure media freedom to ensure democracy continues to flourish and mature in the country. He emphasized the importance of journalistic ethics codes to elevate the dignity and status of media practitioners.
While advocating for media freedom, Prime Minister Anwar also cautioned against its abuse, stressing that media should not be used by certain groups to sow discord and seeds of hatred among ethnicities and religions, which could harm the nation.
Today’s journalists face significant challenges in disseminating truth in this post-normal era, where truth has become increasingly relative and confusing, and where cultures and religious beliefs are eroded, he added.
In conclusion, Prime Minister Anwar announced two significant matters as good news for media colleagues:
📌 An additional allocation of RM1 million for the Hawana Charity Fund to assist more veteran and elderly media practitioners experiencing financial difficulties.
📌 An allocation of RM1 million to the BERNAMA Excellence Training Center to conduct courses and training related to artificial intelligence (AI) technology for media practitioners.
