In a historic move, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially inscribed the Alpine Season, known as “saison d’alpage,” on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list of humanity. The announcement was made by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Alain Berset, on December 8, 2023, through his official Twitter account, @alain_berset.

In his tweet, President Berset expressed pride in the recognition, stating, “L’@UNESCO a inscrit la saison d’alpage sur la liste du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’humanité ⛰🐄🧀 Inalpe, désalpe, production du fromage, gestion des pâturages: cette tradition datant du Moyen-Âge réunit un ensemble de coutumes et savoir-faire inestimables. @BAK_OFC_UFC.”

The UNESCO inscription acknowledges the comprehensive significance of the Alpine Season, encompassing traditions such as Inalpe and désalpe, cheese production, and pasture management. Rooted in medieval times, this cultural heritage represents a collection of invaluable customs and expertise.

Switzerland’s commitment to preserving its cultural identity and heritage is evident in the efforts reflected in the UNESCO recognition. The Alpine Season plays a crucial role in connecting the Swiss people with their historical roots, fostering a sense of pride and continuity.

The tweet also included a nod to @BAK_OFC_UFC, recognizing the collaborative efforts of the Federal Office of Culture in Switzerland. This achievement highlights the importance of safeguarding traditions that form the fabric of a nation’s identity.

As the UNESCO inscription elevates the Alpine Season to global recognition, Switzerland celebrates not only a cultural triumph but also a commitment to preserving and sharing its rich heritage with the world. (*)
